What inspired you to let your moustache grow?

If I am truthful it was a spur of the moment decision while on holiday in Ireland. I hadn’t shaved and people asked if I was doing a “Movember” for charity which is popular there. Aside from being for a good cause there is enjoyment of going against the flow for a while. Beards are fashionable but not moustaches and not conforming is not being boring.

A moustache is also a good way of temporary reinventing yourself. There’s a famous precedent for this in the history of popular culture. By 1966 the Beatles were the biggest band in the world, but there getting tired of screaming teenagers, death threats from religious groups and constant touring. In August of that year having played their last concert in San Francisco they agreed to stop touring to concentrate on their studio albums. The music would be different – they would create Sgt Pepper and Strawberry Fields Forever – but so would their image. To the shock of their fans they all appeared with moustaches in November of 1966.

By 1967 everyone was wearing a moustache!
